Overview

Phospholipids are a class of lipids that are a major component of all cell membranes as they can form lipid bilayers. Lecithin consists of a mixture of three main phospholipids: Phosphatidylcholine (PC), Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and Phosphatidylinositol (PI). All these lipids are important based on their functionality and nutritional properties. Among the phospholipids, the most important product is phosphatidylcholine.

It has been proven that phosphatidylcholine has the ability to improve the solubility and absorption of pharmaceutical active ingredients that are either insoluble or barely soluble in water or only soluble in physiologically unacceptable solvents. In pharmaceutical applications, phosphatidylcholine may reduce objectionable side effects of drug substances and thereby render them physiologically more tolerable.
